Blog HW 4/2

Research Question: Does fashion help people construct an identity?

Two sources that have helped me answer my question is the book Fashion, Culture, and Identity by Fred Davis and the website Marie Claire.

Davis, Fred. "Do Clothes Speak? What Makes Them Fashion?" Fashion, Culture, and Identity. Chicago: University of Chicago, 1992. 1-18. Print.

Santos, Rich. "What Fashion Really Means to Men." Marie Claire. N.p., 21 Feb. 2011. Web. 09 Apr. 2013. <http://www.marieclaire.com/sex-love/men/fashion-and-identity>.

The digital age and internet are changing the concept of plagiarism traumatically because more and more people are starting to think it is okay. You would think people would make sure and know how to cite their sources. It is just so easy to click copy and paste and forgetting to even acknowledge what source the material came from. They are also changing to concept of plagiarism because there are tools ad apps to where you can edit something and easily thinking its your work and no remembering that you got the idea and formatting from someone else. Writing papers are always a tough one to spot out unless you have a handy computer to look up sentences in the paper or you can spot out words that the writer usually doesn't use.

Blog HW 4/24

-My research question is 'Does fashion help people construct an identity?'
-I do believe that fashion helps people characterize who they are. The clothes they decide to buy show what kind of person they are or what they are into. For Example) Emo people tend to dress in very dark colors such as black because that is what they like or are into.
-I would provide my presentation but I need to add a couple of things before it is complete.

Blog HW 4-11 Prezi

Two platforms that I could use for my presentation would probably be Prezi and Google sites. I have used them both. I feel that Prezi I will be able to put more creativity and style into my project. There are more things you can do with Prezi than a Google Site. Prezi is more of a fancy PowerPoint. They have so many different templates to choose from according to your project. Google sites on the other hand are very simple to me. You cant really add your own style and if you do it will take forever just to change the color of the side bar. I will say that Google Sites is good for just putting of your information on the template and present. Its just that simple. I've used both of these sources for science based classes and they worked perfectly fine. For my final poster, as of now, I will be using Prezi. A homemade video might be an appealing way to present my research to my classmates but I doubt I will be doing that. Maybe, a short video.

Blog HW 3/14

I choose to use the Proquest Research Library. I haven't used that database before, I always stick to Galileo. The Proquest database was a little confusing. I really didn't like it, only because it wasn't straight to the point like Galileo. Proquest, sometimes the information that you are looking for doesn't come up in one search. You definitely have to use key searches, I think. Like stated before it wasn't that helpful for me because with Galileo you can find books, articles, and websites in a second unlike Proquest you have do a couple of searching techniques. The searching technique that I use the most is quotations. I feel that it helps the most because it searches exactly what I want. I did use my research topic 'Fashion around the world' for the search. I used quotations and it really didn't help on Proquest. I did not find any new information that I could use for my research.

3/5 BlogPost

Twitter: http://www.divasinc.co.za/2013/03/fashion-week-fever/#.UTSCQCNEmas.twitter
Newsvine: http://leejaywalker.newsvine.com/_news/2011/05/28/6738562-japanese-fashion-buzzing-with-spirit-and-energy-in-tokyo
Reddit:  http://www.vice.com/en_uk/read/fashion-week-in-dubai

The tools that I choose to use were Twitter, Newsvine, and Reddit. I have never used Newsvine or Reddit to do any searching, these sources were pretty good to use. Yes, these tools were useful for finding information on my topic. I searched fashion and of course on a social media website such as Twitter there was a lot of information and links I could have chosen from. Surprisingly, I thought that Newsvine would not have anything on my topic but they I did found an article on the Japanese fashion. Most of the articles or blogs that I did find were about the previous fashion week that was held in different countries such as Paris and Dubai. Reddit and Newsvine would probably be more useful for me if I needed some research or another type of source to look at but Twitter would most-likely be used for my interest. My purpose for using social media is for entertainment. I mostly use it when I'm bored or looking for someone. The social media that I use all the time is Instagram! I love it, I like to look at pictures that people post. :)

2/26 Blog Post

http://blogs.worldbank.org/youthink/what-makes-person-good-we-asked-teens-around-world

This article is titled What makes a person good? We asked teens from around the world. This article wants to know what is there to consider whether someone is a good person, what are the qualities. This article surveys children and teens around the world to see what they consider a 'good girl/boy' and a 'bad girl/boy'. Girls that were surveyed between the ages of 12-17 from Bhutan say that a 'good girl' is "a very reliable daughter; she can take care of the house and at the same time behave outside as well."I think the author of this article is stating an opinion. I feel as though it is just a question and people want to know the answer to so the author gets different opinions to support his question. I'm not too sure if this article had any logical fallacies.

Presearch

Presearch helped to refine my topic and broaden it because my specific topic was to narrow so therefore I had to broaden it and I also narrowed the countries I have chosen to do research on, which are Paris, Japan, Africa, and of course the United States. I still need to broaden my topic because it does not answer some of the 'who, what, when, why, or how'. I am not exactly sure what my exact topic is any ore but I will definitely have the same research. One of the books that I have chosen to check is called Paris Fashion. Call # GT887.S74 1988

Process of Research

The research process has different because during class I do research on the Galileo site and the other academic research engines. During class I try take advantage of the exclusive search engines because I'm not able retrieve them on my own and because they have lots of valuable information. One thing that I am confused about is Special Collection section, it is hard to use because are not many different collections to use in my research. Also, being able differentiate between a credible and non-credible source. But other than that everything is pretty clear. I wish we would talk more about how to use the research what you have found, like dissecting the information.

Special Collections

I might be able to use special collections in my research because may be different cultures have a conflict with different things to where such as third world countries where women have to cover their faces. Within the  Special Collection I will search for collections that have things that deal with the history of fashion,  cultures that have rules of what to wear, where different styles are derived from, etc. I know for sure I will use Special Collections for papers that I will have to write in my US History class and my English class. I feel as though I will definitely be using Special Collections for any history paper that I have to write in the future. I think that the Special Collections part of the research process is important because you could have actual information no one ever knew about the topic. There could be really detailed info that will make your project interesting. It would only be an advantage!

Refined Research

My narrow topic that I have chosen is Fashion around the world. The question I chose to research is 'How do other countries exhibit their fashion?' I feel like this a good question because there are many points that I can mention and go into many details about the different countries. As far as the different aspects of fashion in the cities and countries of my research. Keywords that I choose to search for books were fashion, fashion worldwide, fashion in different cultures, and cultural fashion. The keyword fashion in different cultures didn't really work to well, I didn't get a lot of feedback. An example of a primary source that I will us for my project are popular fashion magazines as stated in my other blog post.

Helpful Sources

Different information sources that I may use for my research topic would mainly be magazines because I know a lot of fashion comments and opinions are in different magazines such as Instyle, Glamour, Vogue, FASHION, and Cosmopolitan. Using these magazines will have many articles on certain countries that I chose to research. I will also try to use sources such as scholary journals and databases. The databases will help me to see how certain people, authors, and bloggers think about fashion around the word. I'm not too sure what disciples might have an interest in my topic. There are plenty of groups that might have an opinion on my topic such as modeling agencies, stylist, and fashion bloggers. I'm sure fashion bloggers would have a lot to say about fashion all around the world because they probably have more inspiration for fashion overseas. Modeling agencies are always wondering what type of styles should be shown on the runway, whether its clothes from or made in India or Malaysia. I know there are various things that I could look into to get great information.

FASHION

Key words that I have choose to research are fashion world wide, fashion in different countries, and interesting countries with fashion. These key words or phrases that I chose narrowed down my search which made it better for me to work with. The countries and cities that I chose to research are Bangladesh, Paris, Australia, Brazil, Japan, and America. I thought that these cities and countries would be cool and interesting to compare and to see how they dress and style their clothes. I'm not too sure of my research question but I have been thinking on the lines of something like 'How do other cities and countries exhibit fashion?' That question might take some revising. Today's class helped me to go in depth with actual key points to focus on such as the countries and cities I have chosen. This was very helpful for me!

Two Researching Topics

For my final project I was thinking about researching fashion and nursing. I know those topics are at the opposite ends of the spectrum but these topics are things I take interest in.  I've always been into fashion ever since high school, I love to dress. I like putting different things together and making it work. Of course I have some type of interest in Nursing because it is my major. I love being hands-on, helpful, and caring towards people. For this project I would like to identify fashion all around the world and how other countries dress. Also, I know that other countries wear different clothing depending on their culture. Maybe I can choose about ten different countries and research their clothing and how they feel about fashion. I would most definitely choose Paris because it is the fashion capitol, somewhere like Bangladesh, and other cool countries. With the topic of nursing I would do the aspects of different nurses because I know most people say they want to be a pediatric nurse be cause that is all they know. Therefore, would like to just throw out of couple of other nursing positions.

Decisions

A major purchase that I ever made was probably purchasing my iPhone 4S. I had many phones options that I could choose from such as the Galaxy or another high-tech touch screen phone but of course it was not hard for me to make up my mind. I decided to go with the iPhone 4S. I did have two options of colors, between black and white. I went ahead and chose the white one because I thought it was cool and I was tired having a black phone; the white iPhone 4S was something different. I did get some advice from my mom surprisingly because a couple of her co-workers told her some facts that I did not know of. I also got some advice from the salesmen at the AT&T store. He was very informative and helped through all of the step as far as setting up my phone and the accounts on the phone. I consulted the price which was not very negotiable because there is a set price for the phone. Also, we consulted when certain prices would be seen on the bill and how to check usages of the phone. All of this information was consulted because it was important and just to keep up with everything.

Likes & Dislikes of the Library

My absolute most favorite part of the library is the 3rd floor. It is very quiet and peaceful. I feel like I can get a lot my work done up there. There isn't much talking at all which makes it even better. Another part of the library that I like is being able to rent items such as calculators, markers, laptops, and of course books. And not to mention the fantastic Starbucks that is located on the the main level. My least favorite part of the library is the main floor. It gets very loud at times and it is hard to concentrate. Although, the Starbucks on that floor makes up for that. Another thing about the main floor is that sometimes computers aren't available for you to use because it will be crowded. I am still semi-confused about the library hours, I still can never get them down, but other than that there is nothing that I'm confused about.

Introduction

Hi there,

I'm Celena Miller and I'm from the city of Atlanta and I attended Dunwoody High School. I am interested in studying Nursing here at UWG. I decided to make this decision when I volunteered in the hospital and got really into interacting with the patients.
One thing that surprised me about today's class was creating the Blog. I had in mind that in this class we would be doing research and just surfing the web. When I heard that we would be creating a Blog, it immediately took my interest. I've always wanted to create a Blog about something. One thing that I would like to learn about more about this semester are websites that are credible and websites that aren't credible. I didn't know there was even a such thing.
